About the District

Burera District is one of the five Districts that make up the Northern Province of Rwanda. It covers an area of 644.5 km², with a population density of 682 people per km² (2022 Population Census).

The District has 17 sectors, 69 cells, and 571 villages. Burera District has a population of 387,729 inhabitants (Men: 184,782, representing 47.7%; Women: 202,947, representing 52.3%).

Burera District shares a 63 km border with the country of Uganda. Six out of the 17 sectors that make up the district border Uganda.

Burera District also shares borders with the districts of Gakenke, Musanze, Rulindo, and Gicumbi.
